Dr. Adamu Umar UsmanThe Chief of Party ACE-1 Project, was born and brought up in Gombe State northeastern Nigeria where he had his basic primary and secondary education. He had his MBBSdegree in 1994 from the University of Maiduguri, Master of Public Health (MPH) from Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Master’s in Health Economics (MHE) from Bayero University Kano, and Ph.D. in Epidemiology and now finalizing a second Ph.D. in International Public Health with EUCLID University, The Gambia.
He is an astute epidemiologist and health economist with over 28 years of experience working in the public, private, and development health sectors within Africa. To mention but a few, before his retirement from the public sector, by 2003 he has repositioned the TB and Leprosy control program in Gombe State to take the lead in achieving the WHO leprosy elimination, TB microscopy, and DOT sites targets. In 2006, as an executive secretary of Gombe SACA, he was instrumental in the establishment of the first state-owned comprehensive ART sites in northern Nigeria.
Umar served as a health coordinator of the International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO), central TB-HIV Advisor of ICAP-University of Columbia, Chief of Party/Project Director of BMGF projects, and a Principal Investigator for the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) IDEAS Project. He also served as State Program Manager on the USAID/FHI360 SIDHAS project, Director Technical of GF/FHI360 HIV project, and Director Programs of National AIDS Impact Indicator Survey (NAIIS) under Maryland Global Initiatives Corporation Nigeria (MGIC). In February 2022, Umar became the Chief of Party (CoP) for the new USAID-funded “Accelerating Control of the HIV Epidemic in Nigeria” (ACE) project cluster 1 (Borno, Adamawa & Yobe states).
