AHNi Officially Launches a USAID funded Project aimed at Accelerating the Control of HIV Epidemic in Nigeria.
Achieving Health Nigeria Initiative (AHNi) through The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) & U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is announcing officially launch of a project that will support Borno Adamawa and Yobe State Governments to accelerate progress in control of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Adamawa – Nigeria – On August 19th, 2022, Achieving Health Nigeria Initiative launch a new project titled “Accelerating Control of the HIV Epidemic in Borno Adamawa and Yobe (ACEBAY). The Event is hosted by His Excellency Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, The Executive Governor of Adamawa state at the Adamawa State Government House Banquet Hall. Also in attendance are the Governors of Borno State Prof. (Engr.) Babagana Umara Zulum; Yobe State His Excellency Mai Mala Buni including a USAID delegation led by the U.S. Ambassador Mary Beth Leonard, the Respective State Commissioner’s for Health, Director Generals of the State’s Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS (SACA), Permanent Secretaries, Directors, officials from relevant government agencies, private sector players and development partners.
ACEBAY, a 5-year $53 Million grant funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will be implemented by AHNi as the prime and a consortium of both local and international partners that include FHI360 as a technical partner, American University of Nigeria, Eklesiyar ‘Yan’uwa a Nigeria, and Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria.
The project will fast track the attainment of UNAIDS 2030 95:95:95 target to end HIV/AIDS and TB as public health threats by 2030. The ACEBAY project will use high-impact patient centered approaches that focus on increasing quality and access to prevention and treatment services, Increasing Resilience, Responsiveness, and Accountability of the Healthcare System and ending New Infections and discrimination towards persons living with HIV a across health facilities and communities in the 3 states.
Despite the overall efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB) in Nigeria, progress Borno, Adamawa and Yobe remains disproportionately low with the 3 states accounting for 6% of the entire population of people living with HIV in Nigeria and 3% of the country’s new infection in 2021 alone. In addition. the unmet need of antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains critical at 32% and about 37,830 patients still unable to fully access quality of HIV/AIDS/TB Services [Insert Name]
The Chief of Party for the ACEBAY project Umar Adamu Usman while giving his remarks highlights the need for strong collaboration with the various health agencies and departments in the states and calls on the state governors to prioritize investment in health and build on the current gains made by the healthcare system.
